Is there a way to clip text down?

Example:

I have this displayed:
http://www.asdfashdfkasjfhas.com/aasdfdsaf.php

And I want THIS displayed:
http://www.asdfashdfk...

Basically, long strings of text wrap in my table and it's not necessary to have the whole line of text. It's an HREF anyways and my ONLY goal for this is to keep my table looking nice.

If it's possible to only grab the first X # of characters, could someone please provide a code snippet.

Sounds like you want substr: http://us4.php.net/substr

$short_url = substr ('$url', 0, 50);

will shorten the url to 50 characters.
