PHP FTP Upload, help please :)

Hi everyone,

Can anyone help with this please?

I am trying to work out how to upload some files with php, as for some reason my server won't seem to submit forms that have the enctype="multipart/form-data" setting, does anyone know why?
enctype="application/x-www-form-urlencoded" works which is what I will be using, as I need to get this to work soon
somehow😉

So, if I had a form that submits the paths of the files to upload, im guessing it should work.. the code I have from the php documentation is below, but it seems to fail. It is connecting fine, just I think I have the type of the local and remote paths wrong, what do they need to be? (relative, temporary?)

An FTP connection requires 1 FTP server and 1 FTP client. With the code you've shown, you have the parts of an PHP FTP client. But it needs a server to connect to. You're thinking your computer will be the server, but mostlikely its not actually running an FTP server, so the connection will fail.

I'd recommend looking for a tutorial on file uploading or checking out [man]move_uploaded_file[/man] which is only 1 of the couple puzzle pieces you will need...

ive got the file on the web server I am trying to upload to.. to put local file from my browsing computer to the server..

This doesn't make much sense.

You have a file on the web server you are trying to upload to. Ok.

I think you're trying to say the same thing - you are trying to take a file on your PC and upload it to the web server. Is this correct?

im sorry, I really messed up what I was trying to say! my english is terrible today...

but luckily, yes, you managed to decipher what i was trying to say 🙂

I am on my local computer, and have put the ftp file on the remote server. And by running the file on the remote server via my local browser, I am trying to upload a local file, from a form I submit to the remote file, to put on the remote server..

I hope I havent confused you again 😕

Your way of saying it is far more logical "take a file on your PC and upload it to the web server." 😉

This is where I am not sure what paths to use, local is obviously going to have to be full.. e.g. c:\folder\file.. but what would I use for remote? does it need to be the full path, e.g. user/account/a/c/c/public_html/folder/file.jpg or only relative to the file on the server, e.g. ./folder/file.jpg

I am assuming it is possible to use the local path here.. am i correct?

Ok - you have a file you want to upload to the web server.

Using FTP, the web server has an FTP server. So things can be uploaded and downloaded to the FTP server assuming an FTP client is used to connect to it.

To initiate an FTP session, a client connects to the FTP server and issues commands to start the transfer.

You're using PHP to initiate the transfer. That's fine. It becomes the FTP client.

How is the PHP FTP client going to connect to your home machine? Are you running an FTP server on your PC?

Basically, you have a problem here. I would recommend an HTTP file transfer using an HTML form. You'll want to check out how PHP handles HTTP file transfers. The move_uploaded_file and checking out $_FILES will help...

my local machine is just a normal computer, which could be any computer with the internet...

I was planning of using a form with a file field, using enctype="application/x-www-form-urlencoded" which would submit the local address to the php file, to upload? if that will work.. im guessing it would seeming ftp clients such as ws_ftp and other software programs use local addresses...

I did have the below file, which I think is the method you mentioned in your last post.. but it only worked with the form type being enctype="multipart/form-data" ... which for some reason seems to have stopped working (the form just halts when submitted on the progress bar.... strange as it worked before..) ...

but the file wont work below with the "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" type.. so i was planning of using php's ftp functions to do it instead...
