fopen, fwrite, fclose

which of the f functions do I use and how do I use them to open a file called test.txt, then display what it says in that file and then re write that file to say something else. Please help, thanx

There's tons of ways to read a file. I prefer [man]file[/man] (for an array) or [man]readfile[/man] (for a string). Both of those will read the entire file without a handle.

To write though, you need a handle, which means you first [man]fopen[/man], then [man]fwrite[/man], then [man]fclose[/man].

Assume the file name is foo.txt, and you have loaded what you want to write into the variable $foo....

$handle = fopen("foo.txt","w");
// the w truncates the file and opens for writing
fwrite($handle,$foo);
fclose($handle);

now I am guessing $foo is what i add, is that true? Alsoif i write to the file, does it add to the file or delete it all and add what you type or does it add on?

Yes, $foo is what you're writing. And you can do any of those things. Read the modes on the fopen page.

1 last thing, i went like this

$t = readfile("test.txt");

echo $t;

?>

test.txt says "Hello All" now on that page there ^ it displays "Hello All9" where is the 9 from and how do I get rid of it

That's the number of bytes read into the buffer. Use file_get_contents instead...
