MySQL table for existing data

I wasn't sure if I should have posted this question under Newbies but the truth is I've been using MySQL for several months and enjoyed great success when installing other people's scripts to databses I make using phpMyAdmin.

My challenge is developing from scratch, for which I've got good resources, manuals and much time into practice and test.

My question is two-fold, as I have 14,000 records of Security Dealers that I want to install in MySQL at www.securitydealers.com

1) what should my table look like for data (sample) as follows;

"John Doe","Managing Partner","BM SECURITIES LTD.","P.O. Box 201","Grand Cayman","Cayman Islands,"","","345--555-5999",

2) once the table is created inside my database on MySQL, how do I load the data in?

since you say you have much time(and you wnat do develop "from scratch") I think you should start with the mysql manual(look for CREATE TABLE) and then look for LOAD DATA or INSERT for loading the data

I should have mentioned; I've tried making a couple of tables and loading data into them, using both the MySQL commands from a shell prompt, and the appropriate button in phpMyAdmin but the procedure fails and I assume it's because my table is wrong.

Hi,
I'm a newbie too, only a few months. The way I learned how to upload databases and tables was by first looking at the "sql" file that was created by other programs I had downloaded.

When you bring up phpMyAdmin, click on your database if there is more than one. If not, then create one just by giving it a name. Click on the database name on the left side, then click on the SQL tab. There will be an option to choose a file to upload. Choose the 'browse" option and locate the SQL file that holds the database and/or tables you want to load. That will load up your database and tables for you. Just take some time and look at the different tables and the field settings under "structure".

You should be able to figure out the file details as far as how to set up the fields in your table. That's how I learned so I hope it helps you out. Next you will move to writing your own scripts lol.

Your idea was sound but I think it's because of the 2 blank fields in my data that I'm having trouble getting the correct SQL statement to generate the tables.

I'll keep pluggin away at this till I get it.

Why have the two spaces? In anycase, couldn't you just have them be NULL or something when querying the DB?

I'm not sure yet, if I can make a new table with less fields.

See I inherited the problem because the site www.securitydealers.com was operational for a couple of years until 2002, then was taken down. So rather than let my Domain sit dormant and the data get stale, I decided to learn MySQL and PHP and do it myself.

Getting the table correct and then loading in the data are where I'm stuck and why I'm in this forum. I'm getting more comfortable with phpMyAdmin and can see all the tables in all the other databases I've managed to install using scripts; IE. Forums, Weblogs, CMS, Directories etc...

It's really amazing how many programs I've been able to install on the 12 Domains I own but I still can't get past the simplest step in creating a table and making my own application.
