Yes, I know I'm probably exagerating, but I'm concerned here...

Hmpf :mad: my tutor has just torn apart my idea for a final year project. It has to be worth 450 (yes you read that right) hours of time, but thats including the write-up (i think).

It can be anything, but I'd prefer it to be PHP/MySQL related.

If anyone has any ideas, please please please let me know.

Online Paint Program (either gonna be a lot of javascript or a java applet)
An http terminal(only allows you to run as nobody but still could be pretty usefull)

Actually, I think I might try a couple of those myself. Especially the http terminal, you could have a config file which restricts what the user can do and you could even build in a flag swaps all the commands round :p ls -l appears to do nothing, but when you go to your web directory, ther's nothing there hehe ... rm -rf /home/httpd/* ... hehe

so you want ideas for a piece of PHP/MySQL software that you could write in about 450 hours? well.... has there ever been a script you would have loved to have but it wasnt there? if so, think how long it would take you to write it...

how about something like a forum or a complex chat room allowing private rooms etc, just an idea. notice youre at surrey, my gf does psych there we live in guildford...

The problem is that it has to be a "professional" project. i.e. something that you perhaps could sell to a company.

shes a second year, think she just got a placement at ibm... so we will both be treking off to portsmouth for a yr next yr i think...

what year are you? im just a bum, spent two years doing CS at uni in USA then had problems with my student visa. came back here, worked as a manager at spoons for a year, and now im doing webdesign... (just incase you wanted my life story, lol)

An app which converts a standard site into an imode version? Would be pretty hard and would need a lot of config options but it would be pretty usefull, and deffinately "proffessional"

Not currently available in the UK but it's been big in Japan for a while now and it's getting up speed in Europe, I've just done an i-mode version of our German site. Going live in a a week or two ... hopefully 😉

Yes, tell more. I have hacked together a rather rudimentary one that I use in a little CMS thingy (which makes the little changes a breeze). I've actually never used any kind of editor for php except bbedit (and then I never use any of the tag snippets and stuff)...

My last work is something like a forum where the clients posts their problems.

The manager assigns the problem to one operator. The operator solves it.
The system it's usefull to track the hours of work for each operator, the time for the reply, and other statistic info. All the client are most satisfied for that.

Are about 40 files, 123kb, I've made it in about... 200 hours, and other 100 to add new features and keep out all the bugs...

I think this kind of project can adds amusement to the utility of work.

Weeeell, I was thinking you could have syntax highlighting with different schemas stored in the database; code snippets organised nicely in the database; regular expression based search and replace functionality.

Similar to what bad76 mentioned....

A complete PHP-based trouble ticketing system. Tracks & provides all phases from ticket entry, chain of responsibility, escalation, resolution, system reporting/statistics, etc....

There might already be some existing php-based systems, but quality and the ability to keep it modular (split off and use only part, integrate w/ existing systems), yet also a complete end-to-end package would be a definite plus to some companies.

That was pretty much what my original idea was, but my tutor came back and said that there were loads available so he didn't think it was really worth it.

How about an online editor that is totally customized by the user and various plugins.

A plugin for html tags.

A plugin to give it a PHP database of snippets and functionality.

A plugin for CSS editing...

A plugin for javascript, etc...

One editor that does it all and works on both pc and mac... 😃

It might automatically select the plugin based upon the file extension, but I could see problems with that.

And people would also be able to add their own snippets to the database as well...
