PHP/MYSQL database type thing...

Hullo,
I am what we would call a maiden programmer, i have only done pages and excedingly simple stuff like that. I wish to take it up a notch.
I am wanting to create a "thing" (dont know what it would be called as yet) very similar to a spell checker.
it will need to have a data base of the words that are able to be submitted and then another which would have the normal readable words in it.
in short, many people i know type using words like "b4, sum, soz, ttyl" now to people who dont knwo what they mean or plain get annoyed with abbreviations like that you could put them in to one form and it would then "traslate" it in to "before, some, sorry, talk to you later".
any one follow?
i hope so! all i am askign is if any one has any idea of what i would need to do to make this, a rough outline or what i need to do..... or if any one knows of any templates that i could use and edit them to my little hearts content please e-mail me.. it will all be greatly apprecaited... and if i am able to make this you will be helping an awful lot of people!!

This is very similar to a project that I was working on to add a definitions database to phorum (www.phorum.org, Discussion Thread ). This project is something that I worked on a long time ago and have been meaning to pick up again.

Anyway what I did was create a database of words linked to definitions. I used this database to convert words in my phorum posts (on the fly) to javascript mouseover links, kind like the in-post advertising that is popping up all over the place, but my links popped up a little box with the definition of the word for users who didn't know the meaning. You could emulate this, and instead of having definitions you could have the expanded abbreviation.
