My friend believes that he can gain access to other people's computers by typing in their IP address into the address bar in MSIE. Can anybody give me a technicle reson as to why he can't gain access to somebody's computer just by knowing their IP address? That is (asuming that they are on a cable connection)

if you were running apache, then he could access your server/website by typing in your IP:port number. Otherwise, hes not just going to be able to access your files by typing in your IP address.

There's some truth to what he's saying.

Lets say you've got file sharing enabled on your comp. All he has to do is get your ip address then open up MSIE and type in

\4.65.203.67

(just made up the IP. Sorry if it belongs to someone 😃)

That will allow him to view all your network shares through his browser. Try it. Share some folders on your comp then type \ and your IP in MSIE. It's just like accessing a computer over the network.

\COMPUTER_NAME
\IP_ADDRESS

Same thing. It only works if the victim has shares. If not, then it's not gonna work. You could scan a range of IP's though for those sharing files. 😃

And the number of people who share their entire C: ...yeesh....

I remember a LAN party once - about 128 people; someone brought in their box; got their IP allocated as per RFC2322 and all the rest.

Within forty seconds of going online he was DDoSed off again - his C: was publicly shared and everyone was having a look.
