getting the relevant hitcount from the database

Can some one show me how i can get the relevant hit count from this mysql query.

$qry = "SELECT hits FROM url_redirect WHERE site = '$site'"
    $hitcounter = mysql_query($qry);
    $hitcount = mysql_fetch_array($hitcounter);
    $hits = $hitcount[0];
    // next check if URL is in database

I replied, then decided I hadn't understood your problem...everything looks pretty OK in your code. What's different between what you want and what you get? Whats the problem??

i want to get the relevant hitcount from the database

the data base hase a name names url_redirct and two tables called hits and site

its basically a hit count

I don't know what relevant means. It seems each time you get a sitename, you increment the counter by one. So the first query:
SELECT hits FROM url_redirect WHERE site = '$site'
should tell you how many hits each site has received. If you want to see hits for all sites, just leave out the WHERE clause:
SELECT hits FROM url_redirect
You can rank them by ordering:

SELECT hits FROM url_redirect ORDER BY hits DESC

By the way, url_redirect is a "Table"
hits and site are "columns" or "fields" of the table.

The elaborate data structure that stores such tables is called a database.

WIll tht count all the hits all the sites have

say site 1 has 20 hits and site 2 has 2 hits will this give me a total of 22

I've just had a look at your recent posts on a variety of subjects. It seems from your posts that you are trying to adjust an existing PHP/MySQL script without much understanding of either language. You coud really benefit from reading a book about programming. Just my opinion.

all it returns is one
but i checkd and i know there are 3 so far

Why are you checking the number of rows returned>? It will always be 1.

Geez. Buy a book, please.

There are many bengladeshi programmers who will write a month's worth of code for $100. Perhaps you should look into this.

THis is what i came up with

$rows = mysql_result($query, 0, 0); 
echo $rows;

and plus i do have the book...
i just wanted expert advice.
but all i got was redicule for asking questions

And that's no way to earn respect (especially from people who are paid to write code).

I think part of your problem is that you are having trouble expressing yourself (count the number of errors in the above quote). You also seem to have a bit of trouble with problem-solving skills; nemoman asked you "What's different between what you want and what you get? Whats the problem??" You didn't answer either question - you answered the question "What do you want?" and nemoman didn't ask that.

You're also expected to do some investigative work of your own: nemoman suggested "SELECT sum(hits) FROM url_redirect" and you said "...i have tried and i get ARRAY". Did you once try to figure out what that meant and what to do about it? From the fact that your reply came back in less than quarter of an hour it would appear not. How do you expect to learn anything with an attitude like that? If you expect everything to be spoonfed to you you're (a) never going to get the hang of a knife and fork, and (b) people are going to get fed up with you and leave you to starve.

I suggest you read this essay and learn not to sound like someone who isn't up to the task.
