String statement

Two statements are below. One of the stement works and onother doesn't. I don't understand why #2 doesn't work.

It gives the error message:
Parse error: parse error, expecting T_STRING' orT_VARIABLE' or `T_NUM_STRING' in /var/www/html/account/index.php on line 102

#1 This statement works
echo "<td><a href=\"".$_SERVER['PHP_SELF']."?page=$next\"><b>></b></a></td>";

#2 Doesn't work
echo "<td><a href=\".$_SERVER['PHP_SELF'].?page=$next\"><b>></b></a></td>";

What you want is

echo "<td><a href=\"$_SERVER[PHP_SELF]?page=$next\"><b>></b></a></td>";

or

echo "<td><a href=\"{$_SERVER['PHP_SELF']}?page=$next\"><b>></b></a></td>";
