I have created a form that has one field and a submit button. Basically the user enters a number and submits it, when submitted it calls my search page. The problem I have run into is when they click the submit button it works just fine but if a user enters a number and then presses enter I get nothing on the search page. Doesn't make sense to me does anybody have a clue on whats going on

depends on the code you use in the target page

how do you determine whether the script has been called because of a submit or because the user entered the url by hand?

what about checking whether $_POST['name of inputfield'] exists?
isset and empty may be of help
