Version Management

Hello all,

I have a pretty large project that I have been developing for a few years now. I have never used CVS or tried version managing beyond tagging each final release with a major version.

I'm opening up development to my business partner very soon, and I want to adopt a version management system to keep a close eye on every change we make to this project.

Right now I have installed dotproject for process management, but the file manager in dotproject basically stinks.

So do the five hundred other systems I've found.

Can anybody recommend a good web based version management system for managing PHP code? I need check-in/check-out capabiliity and versioning with in-file tags.

I know "real" CVS is probably the way to go, but I'm not sure if that is an option with my reseller account.

Any pointers in this area would be awesome. I have searched Google, the forums, Freshmeat, you name it.. I stilll haven't found a good solution yet.

WOWZERS. Great find Gary, I will definitely be installing this today.

I also found out that I have CVS on my host. I may end up using CVS for our development tree and Owl for the thousand other documents my business has.

No problemo 🙂 I use Owl for myself as well for the huge scripts I work on, with about 2-3 other people on the team simultaneously 🙂

Well I got it installed and running, seems great so far. Finally a package that doesn't try to do nine million things at once, but seems to do the one thing I DO need, quite well. 🙂

Curiously, about how many scripts do you manage with Owl? I'm hesitant to manage my entire tree as I have literally hundreds of files and tens of thousands of lines of code built up!

Not as much files for me, only 1 'main' script so far, and only about 25 files :p

Oh okay, hehe. 🙂 I'll probably do the tree up in CVS then as I planned, at least to start.

Owl is great though for our other documents, I'm really pleased so far! Thanks again!
