Database Connections best practices

I have a doubt about the best practice to handle the oracle connections, in php. I have an Oracle /php aplication that open and close several times a connection to oracle db using ocilogon and ocilogoff, i have to full select boxes, compare data.

I do 20 times in every php file of my aplication

So my question is : do i need to open and close in every one of the 20 querys that i must do ?

Or do i use a persistent connection ?

Wich is the best way to handle it?

and with postgresql ans mysql?

I can't say what is best, but always logging in and out of the database is alot of extra overhead, even if the libraries underneath are managing your connections for you.

I personally login at the beginning of any page where I need access to a database, and logout at the bottom. As long as I don't need to change users, or access a different database everything is fine. And if I do have to change users, or access a different database I usually just open another connection that I keep open until the end of the page. Since page loading shouldn't take more than a few seconds to complete this is no problem.

I will take this aproach to my aplication, seems to be a better way !!

there must be a way to measure the resources needed in the Oracle server
