We are aware of other freely distributed packages. But xlsLib can potentially be used from any scriptable language or linked against any C/C++ project. It only happens that PHP was the first implementation.
I've not made a formal benchmark, but I'd say that xlsLib (due its nature) is faster than the PEAR implementation.
Anyway, so far, xlsLib can be used for free.
