"Whats your name?" script

I don't know if you can do this in PHP but I'm pretty sure you can in Javascript, but I dont know ANY javascript...

A script that pops up once and asks your name and then after you type it in once, it remembers it next time you go to the site. Then there will be something that tells whos online at any given moment. It's for a really small site for my friends and I. We just like to know who's online.

what ever the language it may be the whole thing depends on using either sessions or cookies..

heres an idea.

Have a login page which checks to see if a cookie is stored with their username. If not the user has never been before, therefore we ask them to login as it were. then the second php sets the cookie thenr edirects them to the rest of the site.
