hey everyone,
Last month when I was trying to figure this out, partial answers were scattered about various mailing lists and google. The following seems to work, so I thought I'd post it so it makes it way into the search engines.

nicely done - whenever i seen this sort of thing attempted before, the major drawback is not being able to navigate away from this script without the stream failing. I guess you could have a popup window that must be kept open to maintain the stream... or does your script pass the stream handling on to the mp3 application?

Yes. There's no need to keep a separate browser window open.
