Login System with Security Code Image

K, I was on a website and I have seen this used before and was wondering what it was used for. Here is what I am talking about

it makes you type in the Security Number when loggin into your account. I was wondering what this was used for? I kinda looked at their code but not all that much. I was wondering if they use this for increased security or what.

they use that style of security so that people can not run automated programs to attack their systems with a bunch of account creations, because the programs can not screen scrape the secruity code.

Usually things like that are used to make sure that it is a human logging in to the site, and not an automated process. A web crawler program will have a much harder time reading the number than a human.
