Search DB WHERE/LIKE

I am trying to search a database using

"SELECT * FROM CDBproducts WHERE $searchfield = '$searchc' ORDER BY $searchfield DESC"

"SELECT * FROM CDBproducts LIKE $searchfield = '$searchc' ORDER BY $searchfield DESC"

I need to search so that if say BLAC is typed it will find BLACK etc.
the WHERE finds the exact match, LIKE doesnt find any thing. Can any one help?

for wildcard LIKES you need to use _ like you would ? in windows/dos and % like you would * in windows/dos

incase you never used wildcards...

_ = single character wildcard match
% = many character wildcard match

so....

LIKE 'blac_' would match black blaca blace blacp etc etc....

LIKE 'blac%' would match black blackend blacker blackest etc etc...

what does it mean LIKE '%%%s%%' ?

its overly redundant... it means the same as *s in windows.... [many chars][many chars][many chars]s[many chars][many chars]......

This is what Dreamweaver creates when creating a recordset with a filter.

Use like in place of the = sign:

select * from table where field1 like 'abc%' or field1 like '%abc';

The % is a wildcard match.

And if you want it to be case-insensitive, use ILIKE.
