Please help as this has been driving me mad for some time now

a) i have 2 xhtml files header and footer.html
b) in the header file i have the <xml> <doc type> declerations as required by the xhtml parser
c) when i call the php scripts i get an error as php won't pass the <? xml etc ?> tag
d) i have tried the use of escape characters

try

echo '<?xml ... ?>';

it should work since content between ' and ' doesn't get parsed. that's the difference between ' and " as string delimiter

if this won't work you may try

echo '<'.'? ... ?'.'>';

Another approach that avoids messy workarounds is to edit php.ini to turn off the "short_open_tag" option.
