Random exclamation points using mail()

I know that people have discovered this annoyance, but I've been unable to find a straight answer to this problem... how do I get rid of the unexpected exclamation points in the e-mails?? They do not show up in preview screens, but of course, they pop up in the real e-mail when it counts. The problem persists whether I'm sending text-based or HTML-based e-mail, with or without attachments, and when the body text comes from posted form elements, pulled from a MySQL database, or hard-coded onto the page. None of it matters, the exclamation points still show up! Someone please give me some help!!!

Here's the fix from the PHP manual.

If you get an unexplainable exclamation mark (!) appearing
in the mail that you send using mail(),you are probally
sending a message wich has no newline characters (\n)

Fix this in your script or use this

$msg = wordwrap($msg, 72);
