Does anyone know what the metacharacter is in PHP for a wildcard? (like the * is in most Winbloze type applictions?)[e-mail]

In what context do you mean. If you are talking about regular expressions then it would be . to say "any character" and then to say zero or more times or + to say one or more times.
ie

preg_match('/.*/',$string); #a pretty useless example
