Smilies?

I need to implement smilies into my forum code, but I have NO idea where to start. Obviously it needs to find if there's : ) in the code somewhere and replace it with and image source html command, but i need an example or something. Help appreciated!

why not just simply use str_replace?

Well I'm not exactly "fluent" in PHP, that's why I'm asking for help. I know HOW to do it I just don't know the commands or anything.
