Extracting the lowest date from a set of results

One of my scripts extracts a list of timestamps. Is there a simple function to extract only the lowest one? Shown below in a mix of PHP and English to show what I'm trying to achieve.

$query="SELECT eng_no FROM " . $Table .  " WHERE job_cat_no='2' and DATE IS THE LOWEST"

[nemonoman]

WHERE job_cat_no='2' ORDER BY YourDateColumnGoesHERE LIMIT 1

ORDER BY means oldest to youngest in case of dates
LIMIT 1 means: I only need one record thanks.
