i've noticed that there are a number of posts with similar questions relating to preserving sessions between http and https, few of them with answers. It is super frustrating when no one answers a question, even to say "dunno" because there is no way of knowing if your question is being ignored for being too stupid, or if no one actually knows. sigh
It turns out my confusion on this matter was related to the fact that during testing, when I had cookies turned on, a cookie was set for the domain on the unsecure http connection, but when I learned I had to enable trans_sid in order to pass the session data to https and turned off cookies in my browser to test this, the server was still using the existing cookie in my browser, and not appending the trans_sid. The day after I posted this, after the cookie had expired, the trans_sid miraculously started working.
Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else has a similar issue and doesn't immediately realize the source of the problem.
