httpd.conf - Which one ?

I've installed PHP4. (SuSE 9.0 Pro and Apache 1.3)

Apache shows the text in the PHP files, rather than running the script.

I've followed the notes about adding AddType and AddModule statements to the httpd.conf file.

But which copy of that file? I have four on my system.

I edited the one in /etc/httpd - I choose it as it was the largest - 55K

Advise?

If you have installed apache, then under start, programs , apache and then choose edit the httpd.conf file. This is the one you have to change

Im a little unsure why you have four on there. Have you installed apche and the uninstlled it again before?

The first thing I would do is slocate -u to update a useful tool for finding files.

Then do slocate httpd.conf to find out how many you have.

You have more than one because your linux install might have installed apache for you when you installed linux. Since you installed apache from source you will get another two copies -- one in the source and one in the install directory. If you specified a --prefix=/some/dir when you configured apache, you want to edit the httpd.conf that resides below that directory. You also want to be starting apache from the executable in yourprefix/bin.

Thanks for the tips - I'll try that stuff.

This is one thing I don't like about YaST (SuSE install tool.)

You don't really know where it puts things . . . also you don't know what is left for you to do manually.

I'm finding it is better to do the installs at the command line.

when I reread your post i noticed you didnt say explicitly that you just installed apache from source. Since I recently installed apache and had the same issue, and because Im tired, I assumed you did that same thing.

Either way you could just modify all the httpd.conf files so that they are the same, then you shouldnt have a problem...😉

If so, that screwed me over a lot in the beginning too.
