Really really quick html question

Can you have the following:

<table>
       <tr>
              <td>Some info</td>
      </tr>
      <div>
       <tr>
               <td></td>
       </tr>
       <tr>
              <td></td>
      </tr>
      </div>
</table>

you can but it's no valid html and therefore it's not sure that all browser will display it

why do you want do do such weird things?

seriously, i want to be able to hide and show different sections of a table. It's been done (i.e. before I took it over) elsewhere in the site where the <div></div> has occured inside the <td></td> tags, but never the other way around and I wondered if it were possible.

why cant you directly use the <tr> and </tr> instead of using something more arbitrary?

of course there's always using tables without actually using <table>s....

just use in ID on the tr like laserlight said. nothin wrong with that.

Thats all well and good, but the reason I want to use a div tag is because there are multiple rows in the bit that that I want to display/hide.

Just thinking about it, does the id for each tag have to be unique? As in if I gave all the rows in the section the same id, that should work, shouldnt it?

IDs have to be unique, but not classes.

Nah, that wouldn't work then cos the javascript that im using (js ain't my forté, so im just using what ive got) needs ids.

What if I gave all the rows the same name rather than id? would that work instead?
