Suming columns using PHP

How do you sum columns in a database using PHP variables and statements. I am reading about a sum() function, but I get nothing but errors. I need to add a column named 'goals' producing a variable named 'total goals'.

I haven't done it, but it goes something like this. Uses the SET operator.

... SET totalGoals = goals + 1
