Spoofing the Submit event

Is it possible to 'spoof' the submit event using PHP.

Basically I want a login form in a php page to first call itself, (where I will set some varaibles for later use), and then forward the saved login info to a third party CGI before moving onto the rest of the script.

If anybody has any ideas I'd be delighted to hear them.

a rough lay out of how you could do it

if(isset($_POST['submit']))
{
//body onload submit form
//make form to submit to cgi script
}
else
{
//make login form

For some odd reason I wasnt able to detect if submit was set or not - however I just changed that for the name of one of the form elements that was submitted and Bob is indeed your mothers brother.
