[Resolved] checking the length of a var

Hello,

I am creating a file that is to be imported by our accounting system. I have 2 vars $fname $lname

I am currently combining those like so
$client = "lname/fname";

However our accounting system will only take 20 charaters, if the field is longer it will reject the importing of the file.

How do I check the length of the var $client and if it is more than 20 charaters long remove the extra charaters from the right side. ($fname)

Consider using [man]strlen/man, or maybe just use [man]substr/man right away.
