PHP/PostgreSQL connection pooling

Hi All,

I've been searching around for a connection pooling solution using PHP 4.2.2 and PostgreSQL 7.3.4, but haven't found anything promising.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Have you used that? Does it make much of a difference?

I haven't ever used it, but I have heard many positive reports on it.

Our server has never needed connection pooling or clustering, so we've never implemented it. In four years of running postgresql our unscheduled downtime has been about 5 minutes or so.

Yeah, I usually never have more than 2-3 postgres processes. Apache 2/PostgreSQL /RedHat 9 has been performing much better than Apache 1/MySQL/RedHat 7.

The flavor of apache hasn't made a big difference on our server, but the latest Linux kernel for 7.2 (2.4.24 or something like that) and the latest version of Postgresql (7.4.2) make it fly.

The kernel fixed problems in the older 2.4 kernels with goofy behaviour by bdflush under heavy load, while the upgrades to pgsql in each major sub rev in the last two years or so have been sweeping in terms of performance gains and sweet new features (like substring with regex, etc...)
