More than one session at a time?

Is it possible to have two simultaneous sessions running side by side on the same pages?

I want a log-in session and a shopping cart session to operate independantly but it doesn't seem to be possible to have two simultaneous sessions.

I originally thought the point of ascribing names to sessions was to differentiate between two sessions running simultaneously but I do not think this can be the case as a URL can only pass one session ID. Am I right?

Can you show me a possible use for session naming?

I think its possible. I've never tried it myself because it seems unneccessary.

why have 2 sessions. Just put the information for the cart in the same session. A session can store strings, arrays or objects.

but if you want to do 2 sessions, call session_name(LOGIN_SESS)
session_start();
session_name(CART_SESS)
session_start();

see if that works.

You are quite right - it is not necessary.

I finally opted for the single session and deregistering session variables individually rather than destroying the whole session (which seems a much more sensible way of doing things that I just did not think of before - duh).

So I don't know if two simultansous sessions works yet as I don't have time to try it but I feel that it won't work as will the browser use two session id strings in the URL if need be?

If anyone knows it would satisfy my curiousity if you could post an answer here!
