.htaccess bug w/ php_value auto_prepend_file?

I have the following in .htaccess for one directory on my site

php_value auto_prepend_file ./auth

I use it to restrict access to one directory. However, sometimes that auth page comes up even for other directories that do not include the .htaccess file!😕

I have apache 2 and php 4.3.4. Please suggest what to do.

hmmm ... .htaccess files are inherited, so if you're talking about subdirectories that's normal.

unfortunatelly it's not subdirectories! it's all directories, same and upper lever dirs.

is it possible that what i set in the .htaccess file works for other directories also (not subdirs.)?

any way you could describe the heirarchry, pointing out the .htaccess files, and the directories being affected?
