E-mail attachment w/o PHPmailer Class

Hello, I'm interested in sending e-mails with attachments but I have no idea how to start. I've done a few searches of the phpBuilder forums, but without success. Most of them refer me to the PHPmailer class, which is not installed on my host server. I was wondering if there was a way of adding attachments to an e-mail using some other way, such as in the headers or something. Sorry if I'm not making sense but I only started to learn the basics a couple of weeks ago.

Cant you just download PHPMailer and use it?

Maybe I could, but I'm not sure what it is really. I'm trying to create a webpage on www.buildtolearn.com and they haven't installed much more than the basics. I have already sent some mail by using the mail() function, but I would like to add an attachment to it, mainly just for practise. I was wondering if there was a way to do this without bothering the people who run the buildtolearn server.

It is just a set of PHP files that contain PHP classes within them.

You include those files in a given script (probably by using [man]require_once/man), then use the classes.
