php yahoo email?

I do not have a mail server set up an my computer, but i was wondering if i could send email from my yahoo account through php using the following:

I'm pretty sure you need a mail server running or else it won't send anything.

Yes, you need a mail server running., or at least some kind of SMTP server address.

Mail just doesnt magically send itself :p

Try downloading one at Download.com or searching google.

There are some good free ones, as ive used them when I ran a web server a while back.

IF, and only IF, you can send mail from a regular mail client (like Outlook Excuse) via the server named in your php.ini file (I'm quite sure that just "Yahoo.com" won't cut it ...) then you could do it this way. The line in your [Windows] php.ini file is telling PHP which SMTP server to use.

If your ISP has an SMTP server (and well they should) it may be that you could use that one as well.

The issue is one of allowability. Usually (and just as an example) an ISP is not going to allow anyone that is not dialed in to their system to use their SMTP server. It used to be, in yahoo's case, that you could send mail via their SMTP servers if you had a yahoo account and address. It may be that they are pickier now, but I don't know, as I have little contact with that site, except when I wanna check my link:

In case you dunno how to collect mail server information, here's a little info on yahoo.com:

Non-authoritative answer:
yahoo.com       preference = 1, mail exchanger = mx1.mail.yahoo.com
yahoo.com       preference = 1, mail exchanger = mx2.mail.yahoo.com
yahoo.com       preference = 5, mail exchanger = mx4.mail.yahoo.com

You might try those in your PHP.ini. Keep in mind that you'll have to restart (Apache?) PHP to have it reread its ini file....
