Regular Expressions: Matching variable Text and keeping it between Replaces

What I want to do is find somehting like this:

happyXgolucky

Where happy is either hardcoded text, or text matched using other metacharacters. X is a positive integer, whose exact value is unknown. golucky is the same (in terms of what it is, not exact value) as happy.

I want to replace that text with:

intelXinside

Where X is the same number from before, and intel and inside are in the same boat as happy as before.

The trick in all this is basically to keep a variable (as in changing) peice of text through a regular expression and then stick it in there at the end.

And I'm very new at regular expression in general. Thanks for any help in advance

Got another question though:
How can I match anything except a certain character? (and newlines to simplify it)

Using say X as the character I want it to not match Would it be something like:

[.+|^X]

[swr]

Try this:

[^X]+

That will match any character that is not an X, one or more times.
