who do you host your server with?

please give them marks out of ten and why, ie they're great and so solid i could trust my kids life with them or they suck, our downtime is 98% and hello world pages take two days to load.....

i'd appreciate the views of the hardcore folk here. i know your lives are held by your host.

we need stability - speed - reliability - reliability - support - speed - stability

I currently am hosted 2 places, and probably should be broken down into subcategories....

    Bravidio:
    Speed: 10/10
    Reliability: 9.9/10
    Support 0.5/10

Do NOT sign up with them if you ever expect any issues or problem correction, because it will not get resolved.

    My home connection:
    Speed: 5/10
    Reliability 9.5/10 (power outages)
    Support: 1 million/10 😃

I usually recommend globat.com to anyone who asks me, and I'll probably be switching my bravidio account there when it comes time to renew. I'd rate them:
    Speed: 10/10
Reliability ???/10 -- not sure on this one... prolly 10/10
Support 10/10 -- they've been really excellent on the phone and resolving (only minor) issues.

      i use www.clook.net

i'd give them 10 for practically everything.

Support - when i was looking for a host, i emailed them at about 5am one morning with a few q's. Jim (one of their support guys) got back to me in about 30 seconds (no kidding) with great answers. When i then registered my account, he approved it about 2 minutes later and in three mins i had full access. Whenever the slightest thing happens or something needs announcing, i get an email before i have even noticed. I have never once seen my site (or any of the services) not available, all my payments have gone through asap. They've been great with adding some binaries to the shared hosting server i'm on (namely jhead and jpegtrans binaries).

Pricing - pricing is fantastic. I'm paying about £5 per month for 200megs space, 5gb transfer, 5 mysqls and all the bumpf that comes with it.

Speed - speed is great. Most stunning is that i can consistently bring stuff down off ftp at 70KBps (which is about the limit on my 600kbps connection).

      so yeah, go with clook!

      adam

        We use www.lypha.com

        Support: 9.5/10.

        Speed: 10/10.

Price: 10/10. We are resellers for $179/year. I think their hosting packages start at $6.95.

Reliability: 9.5/10. Had the "too many connections" error a few times while they were upgrading their servers- never had a problem since.

Control/Features: 10/10. Unlimited MySQL dbs. Unlimited email. Unlimited subdomains. Customizable user interfaces and error pages. IP deny. Cron jobs. File uploads ok.
Pre-installed scripts (majority of which are PHP based) includes:
        5 different blog managers
        8 CMS systems
        6 Customer Support systems
        3 discussion boards
        4 shopping carts
        1 FAQ builder
        2 image galleries
        1 mailing list
        2 project management scripts
        2 chat managers
        9 other misc scripts

Coming from Hostway where you were allowed 1 MySQL db, had to pay extra for PHP/MySQL access, had to pay extra for larger mailboxes, had NO control over anything, had only 30 email accounts... etc etc... we are very happy campers now.

Glad to hear you got your situation bumped up, E!

Andy, have you checked the reliability surveys at netcraft.net? I'm sure you probably have...

I like my service. Unlimited root access and whatever the heck I want installed ...

And the server admin does whatever I want him to, whenever I want; can't say that it'd be true for you, though.... 😃

Plus I'm tops for my netblock....

I doubt that anyone from the UK is gonna want to sit on my servers, tho...way too many hops between....

          😉

I'm seriously looking at dr2. Was pointed to them by pyro and they seem pretty good (and cheap - $15 per month, and at the current exchange rate thats about £10 a month) for reseller account.

            Can anyone beat that?

i know i'm milking the same cow here, but www.clook.net reseller accounts start at £12pm or £120 per year, and they are fantastic

It's looking likely we'll get a Dual Xeon box through Clook in Atlanta. Jim seems like a good bloke, I've Googled thoroughly and looked at other forums and I can't find a bad word about them.

Spent yesterday afternoon doing due dilligence on them, background checks, companies house reports and so on. All seems above board and the 'no problem' attitude is more than welcome. Prices are good and go to prove for sure what I've suspected about the UK for some time. People here take the p*** with bandwidth. No other way to put it.

Downsides of clook are no vat reg number yet but applied for, no landline contact number but comments taken on board. Jim runs it and is 5 years younger than me at 23 so you gotta admire what the blokes done to earn a good reputation in a couple of years. If they let us down we know where they live <sinister>hahahahaha</sinister> 😃

Clook pricing would mean it viable to keep our current box in the UK and one in the states. Cool two boxes, one for order fulfilment and stats the other for public sites. 😉 Mmmm toys......

DR2 don't mention dedicated servers but thanks anyway Piersk.

                Dalecosp - we're 2nd and 5th on our netblock. wtf? 😉

Elizabeth, ur majesty.. all Lypha servers are out of stock at the mo but thanks anyway maam. 😉

Goldbug. Thanks for the warning about support with Bravido, mmmm 1,000,000 / 10 for support sounds good. monthly sla esitimate = $£100,000 p/m 😉 as for globat 9 cookies spat out at me and no mention of dedicated.

thanks folks, your input is appreciated - i'll keep updating this thread as things move on and unfold.

i'm new to all this so my opinion might not be worth much but the thousands of people that are hosted with www.lunarpages.com seem to be extremely happy as am i. not sure if they do servers though.

                  support is fanfrigingtastic btw.

                    www.pickaweb.co.uk

i wouldnt buy domains from these guys as theyre very expensive, and I guess the hosting is quite expensive also but you get what you pay for...

24x7 Tech support, all my problems (mostly caused by me messing up my reseller account) have always been handled on a one on one basis immediately.)

latest version of php installed, along with alot of packages.. and osCommerce preinstalled!

                    10/10, amazing.

                    gp

might be worth asking, they seem to do more than they advertise. i have reseller with them that is amazing. good luck
                      gp

                        8 days later

hey andy what did you go for in the end?

                        adam

Well clook were looking very likely but I had q's re the TOS/AUP and emailed but it took them too long (7 hours) to get back to me so we're not going any further with that, I was also put off by no VAT reg number, no landline phone number and the fact it appears that Jim is one Director and I think his mother is Company Secratary. I / we wanna deal with a business and not a family.

I'll update this properly later on with our new boxes spec and host details when my head isn't so far up my a** with work, maybe even after some sleep which would be bloody wonderful and well earnt..... 😉
