session wont start

session_start();
$SESSION['logged'] = $GET['name'];

This works when I load it from my local server, but when its online, it doesn't work. The php version is 4.2.2 both locally and online. So I don't get why it doesn't work online? Any thoughts?

try this


session_start();

$_SESSION['logged']=1;
echo $_SESSION['logged'];

If it echos out im guesing that $_GET['name'] isnt being defined and is displaying a blank session. If that doesnt work try

print_r($_SESSION); or print_r($HTTP_SESSION_VARS);

do you get any error messages?
look at the generated html source too

raise your error reporting level

It doesn't give an error, but what it does do is gets stuck on the loading bar, like the page is trying to load something, it just sits on the loading bar forever. I commented out the session and all the other code worked so I know there something wrong with the session, although I don't get why it like freezes on the loading stage?

The $_GET does have the value in it also.

I also notice my other pages that was the session are doing the same thing, any page that I request that using the sessions sits on the loading bar. But locally everything works just fine.

run a phpinfo to see if sessions are installed correctly, also get in contact with your host telling them of the situation

other then the session.save_path, my local and the server are set up the same. the server save path is /tmp .

I run phpnuke on the same server and it seems to work, all my file are in a folder off of the root where phpnuke is. I even made a new page that consisted of just:

session_start();
$SESSION['logged']=1;
echo $SESSION['logged'];

and it did the load freeze thing... phpnuke has gotta use sessions and they work, but mine which are in a folder don't. Could that be a reason? Its set up the same way locally and works though.. I'll get in touch with the server and see if they can figure this out in a little.

did you tryi using $HTTP_SESSION_VARS instead of $_SESSION ?

I didn't, but I tried it and it seemed to work, except I couldn't carry it to the next page. It seems session_start(); is what is causing the problems.

$HTTP_SESSION_VARS['logged'] = 'test';
echo $HTTP_SESSION_VARS['logged'];

I havn't used it this way, do I have to call anything before $HTTP_SESSION_VARS or can I just do it like I id above and it will work right? Still doesn't make sense why the other way doesn't wanna work.. hmm.

If I put session_start(); above that it doesn't work again.

session_start(); must be used before you can access any session data whether you use $_SESSION, $HTTP_SESSION_VARS or if register_globals on the session name.
