Can anyone tell me what to do to fix $line[DATE] so it will show its value, not the literal? I am sure it is something to do with
' versus " but none of the combinations I have tried work.

To expand on MrHappiness's reply, anything within single quotes is not parsed (except for /' when you want to include a single quote in the string).

So, as MrHappiness demonstrated you need to use the concatenation operator (.) to add the value of variables you want included.
