Mysql timeout and php ini

I have a script that queries a mysql db. Right now it is timing out and I have been told to increase my max_time_out to 240-300. Right now it is at 90.

Correct me if I am wrong but is this not a work around. If it takes this long to query a db does it not mean that the script is getting hung up and that I have something wrong in my code. All it is is pulling 97 records of 1 line text.

Also what is a good time out time.I have left it at 90. Is this ok? Or should I increase it.

Any input would help.

unless you are doing some wicked recursion, or some heavy array manipulation, you should not have to do that. And yes, that is a sign of something wrong in the script. Try posting up your code so we can see where the problem is.
