Connection Check or Flash Check...

hi,

i have a question about php,html and flash. i'm getting lots of emails from americans that cannot go on a website, because there connection is much to slow or the OS is to old. (Win 3.1) 😃

my problem:

the first page is a flash menu in flash v7.

i do not want that people has to chose if <html> or <flash>. and since Win 3.1 is very old and don't support all <javascript> i personaly think it's better to put a <?php?> scipt that those the work instead.

my question:

how can i do a check if flash, or if connection smaller then 56.000kbps or any other idears???

I also don't know how to write this quind of script in <?php?>. in javascript it's easy, but not supported by old computers...

Can anyone help me...?

It might be possible, depending on what is sent in the headers.

However, it looks like you're better off presenting those options to the user, instead of trying to sneak the info from behind.

Ummm I wonder how long we will be trying to cater for older and older and more obscure computers and operating systems?? I would probably consider making an optional redirect to an upgrade site for them instead of catering to their lack of concern for getting decent modern technology. Sorry but its true.

A polite suggestion that they need to do something instead of you needing to do something is all. You can only supply the opportunity.

At the end of the day if they choose to surf the web with a browser that can't experience the diverse multimedia available then it is users choice really. The thing that gets me is when they whine they can't see what others are.

The alternative is never embrace new technologies, avoid anything except the bottom basic pool of simple html, static images and boring text. This is not the web I find exciting myself but I guess to each their own. Users must accept at a certain point personal responsibility for using software adn hardware that can't do the job.

Does that sound fair?
