Problems with Jvascript and PHP

Hi can someone explain why this works

document.write('<?PHP echo "hello"; ?>');

but this dosent. Im looking at it but cant figure it out.

document.write('<?PHP echo "<a href=$Bannerurl target=_top ONCLICK=\"window.location='/Clickengine.php?bannerowner=$Bannerowner&day=$Day&month=$Month&year=$Year&time=$Time&bannername=$Bannername&Bannerid=$Bannerid'\" ><img src=$Imageurl border=0 width=125 height=125></a>"; ?>');

Because there is a problem with string delimiters somewhere.

Because the test input has found a problem with the way the code was written.

Because golfinggod expected people to provide help without also giving substantial information (e.g. what error message was received; how did the code not work; sample test input; etc) that can help people to help himself/herself.

Ah, a mindless less-than-useless IE Javascript error.

A: Get a browser with a real Javascript debugger.
B: Since it's happening on the client, view the source.
