User Traking

Hello all,

If I have a section where if a user would want to receive updates within this section of the website, and he fills out a form with contact info. How would I be able to track subsequent visits to the site/section.

I'm guessing it would be through the use of a cookie with an userID in the cookie which I would have to grab related to his entry in the DB.

Would anyone know how I would do this? And also, what would I do if the user deletes the cookie?

cookie combined with login like this site...if no cookie then have the user login else just get the cookie id value

Hi,

No there is no login. The user would only enter their contact info to get email updates/newsletters, this requires no registration whatsoever. Once they enter their info to receive email updates and click submit, a cookie should then be put in their hard drive. And whenever they come back to the site, php reads the cookie userid and an int is incremented in the db, just for stats.

Anyone have any idea how this would work?
Maybe someone might be able to provide some php code?

with no login, all you have to rely on is the cookie, which will give you skewed results should the user delete the cookies...

all you can do here is test for the existance of the cookie and (re)set it as needed
