Mysql text rows

If I had a text row in my database with like 15 different words in there, would it still be possible to select individual words and maybe delete them? If so how?
Example
DB:
cat
dog
cow
sheep
lamb
goat

Now select Cow and delete it so the db looks like...
DB:
cat
dog
sheep
lamb
goat

$tmp = mysql_query("DELETE FROM tablename WHERE rowname = 'cow'");

*Side Note:
This, however, will delete every instance of 'cow'
