Catalog: Related Items/Related Products

Hello all,

If I have an online catalog, how would I implement a related items feature? Or related products?

I'm thinking that each product would need a reference ID(s) referencing other products in the database.

So how would this work database-wise and php code wise?

[FONT=courier new]Guess it depends on what exactly you want to do. If you are only ever going to 1 related product for each product then you could include a 'related' field in your products table which includes the productID of said related product.

If there are likely to be differing amounts (i.e. some have no related products, some have 1, some have 5) then you may want to look at having a lookup table which stores the 2 productIDs in each row.[/FONT]

I guess I would put 3 related products, also that seems to be the standard as well.

Should I have a related table field, or just add these three fields in the same product table?

You could use a list of keywords to more semantically implement your related items page... Items with the same keywords would be considered related, and all

This provides:

The abilty to link more than 3 products
A way to circumvent looking up IDs for every new product you add.
A nifty architecture for a keyword search to be added later
