Keeping Line Breaks and Fonts

I have text fields in some forms on my site and I'm trying to find out how to preserve line breaks that users enter (maybe fonts too) so they get displayed properly when retreived from the database and are displayed again. Right now, I strip the tags before anything goes into the database, but that means that anything like:

Line 1
Line 2
Line 3

comes out as Line 1 Line 2 Line 3

How do I preserve their fonts and line breaks while still keeping the security? Or is this possible? Thanks.

you can use a text field to store text strings like that with newlines. however i dont beleive the fonts will be saved unless they are done using <font> type tags.

So if someone actually hits return in their entry in the text field and then saves it in the database, the return will be kept in the database and then reflected when the text gets sent back to the browser? It diesn't seem to be happening that way now.

Because they are line breaks stored. You need to parse them to html breaks when displaying.
