strip a series of numbers and convert to variables

I would like some tips or help on how I would strip any series of numbers and convert them in to variables to print out on the page.

for example 123456789

$a=1
$b=2
$c=3
$d=4
$e=5
$f=6
$g=7
$h=8
$i=9

would produce abcdefghi

for example 643215349

would produce fdcbaecdi

Basically, you want to translate a character to another?
