PHP/javascript with forms

I apologize for if this is no the appropriate question for this forum but I seem to get great results from this forum.

I created a form, pretty basic, that calculates fields and totals them up. I can do this in php but I was hoping to avoid a button press so I thought javascript might be the best way to go. so if I have four checkboxes with a specific value to all of them, is there a way I can calcluate them and have them populate without forcing a button press or haveing the form submit, so it would be completely dynamic as you check and uncheck the boxes. I know some basic javascript but have not worked with it a lot. I am assuming this would entail using the focus events, but I don't know how to approach this. Any tutorials or direction on this would be great.

sure,
just use an onClick event handler

like:

<input type='checkbox' name='check1' onClick="calcSumAndDisplay()">

then create your calcSumAndDisplay function

you can use onFocus or blur in javascript, here is example for auto adding price depending on QTY. this may help you out.
