Want to create a form based FTP

Hi,
I want to create a FTP site where people would be able to login to my ftp site and download the files.

Here's the background:

I have a website hosted on unix platform. The site provides me with PHP.

I have created a ftp account and put the files in it. I want my colleagues to be able to access the files. I want to use a form based approach (i.e the user logs in and gets access to the ftp site).

Any references to the scripts/web links will be highly appreciated.

Since you plan to do it via HTTP, you'll need to setup PHP to fetch the files and spit them back out not via FTP but via HTTP. Assuming I understand what you're trying to do.

There was the classic method of doing ftp:[username]:[password]@[domain] (or something like that), but due to security issues, I don't believe you can get away doing this anymore (anyways, it would allow a valid user to pass their URL to someone that is not valid and give them access to your files).

I guess I should be more clear in what I am tring to accomplish.

Here is my "vision".

Step 1: User enters the address (ftp.abc.com)

Step 2: The form pops up. The user enters "Username" and "Password"

Step 3: The ftp directory is opened up where the user has access to all the files.

Step 4: User logs out . I do not know how 🙂

If its truely an FTP server, just add a user and specify the base directory and you're good to go. The only issue is to persuade the browser to go to it and prompt for authentication (right now I'm not able to test, but browsers can open FTP sites).

Since its FTP, all FTP communications take place with the FTP server. Meaning PHP will play no roll in making this work.

Unless of course you want to go back to my first post. Which states you have a web service (over HTTP). Then PHP can handle the authentication. But you'd also have to provide an HTTP <- -> FTP gateway.

How doesnt PHP take any roll havent you seen the FTP Functions.

All you would need is the FTP functions for this.
