website template help

I have successfully made a template for my website. However I've come upon a problem.

I have an articles page, where everything is linked to
?content=articles

When I try to put an article into the articles page like this:
?content=articles&article=0123 it loads 2 pages on top of eachother, the original articles page and the article 0123 page.

how can i make it so that article 0123 is loaded into the first page, so that only 1 page shows up?

answers are hard to give without sample code.. maybe you are looking for something like:

if (isset($HTTP_GET_VARS['article']))   {
 // Do this...
} else {
 // Do that...
}
