Display Number of Sessions

Hi,

I want to display the number of users online. I know how to do this with a temporary database table which expire after 15 mins. Much like Invision Board.

Is there a simpler way to get the server to spit out the amount of sessions on the go?

e.g. Users Online: No. Sessions

depending on if your site is hosted on a shared server or dedicated it wont really work. on unix by default the sessions go in the /tmp folder. but this will contain all the sessions php has made and it will hold on to them for a while so the count would be extremely inaccurate.

Thanks. I considered that.

It is a dedicated server but it runs a lot of community session based sites. So that is likely to be inaccurate.
