Count Function

Can anyone please help me out here???

I want to count the total number of emails sent by everyone.
So far my code is...

if($send)
{
$mails++;
}

echo $mails. " email messages have been sent to date";

However, this only counts the number of emails sent at one particular time.
I want to display the total amount of emails sent by everyone. Please could you tell me how to do this.

firstly, its kind of obvious that you will need to store the variable $mails somewhere

most common ways to do this are in a file or a database.

well.. i suggest you follow the idea of weekender, probably by craeting a table for your mail then update it +1 when sending email

what i generally say if you're stuck is to write some pseudo code

when a mail is sent:
    load the total number of sent mails
    add one to this
    save it

then ask for pointers, and we'll say something such as "have a look at the php manual pages on [man]fopen[/man] (for reading from / writing to files) and [man]mysql[/man] for database access"

people on here are helpful, but they all give their help voluntarily, and as such will not be willing to help someone who isn't trying
